As you know, my life has been one that has known every form of abuse that can be visited on a child, and I have been working to tell my life story with the assistance of Samantha Jones. When I mentioned a call for poems and what it was for, Sam encouraged me to write and we would together see what we could come up with. Upon completion, we sent it in for consideration.
My entry is a powerful piece that tells the story of my life; the shattered reflection of a man seeking to comfort the child he once was and, in some ways, remains. Every time I read it, the tears roll as I recall the turmoil I struggled with growing up. It is my hope that it will be used to inspire others to speak out against abusers and encourage those that hear those small voices, to listen.
So, I wanted to notify everyone that the Inside Out Poetry Reading event is on the way, and after asking for poems from inside prisons, statewide, more than 100 were received. A panel of local poets and a film director carefully sought out those that best fit what they sought to do. It is about matching up poems to those reading them and, in the process, telling a story about the diverse experiences of life and incarceration in Arkansas.
This is a fundraising effort by decARcerate, (which is a grassroots community group focused on reducing the prison population in Arkansas through smart legislation and community action) for the benefit of Pipeline Documentary Film (a feature-length documentary film exploring Arkansas’s “Cradle to Prison Pipeline”), directed by Zachary Crow, who has come to the Max several times to meet and talk with our group. He is an intelligent, down to earth, and kind-hearted man who wants to explore the ways in which children are funneled into the prison system.
This project is about telling your story, connecting with others and, if you would like to hear the collected works, please visit Inside Out Poetry Reading for tickets.
